X-ray surveys with advanced multi-wavelength cross-identification methods

Executive summary:

The workshop took place in Paris on Nov. 30 - Dec. 2, 2015. It gathered 45 experts from Europe, USA, Japan and South Africa.
This event aimed at presenting the main scientific issues addressed by large scale X-ray surveys carried out at high and low galactic latitudes and at discussing the cross-correlation methods and spectral energy distribution (SED) building tools that are essential to make best use of the fast-growing production of multi-wavelength archival data.

The FP7 funded ARCHES project has developed advanced probabilistic multi-catalogue cross-correlation methods applicable to both unresolved and extended sources. Although these tools were originally meant to study the spectral energy distribution of X-ray sources, they are designed to handle any kind of multi-catalogue studies. These tools have already been used to build the SEDs of selected 3XMM DR5 sources that will be made available soon to the community.

The workshop consisted of 5 sessions, focused around the three science demonstration themes of the ARCHES project, i.e. X-ray surveys of AGN, clusters of galaxies and the Milky Way/galactic plane, with introductory reviews and contributed talks in each session. Results from exploratory science cases investigated in the framework of ARCHES were also be presented.

A session was devoted to a discussion of the methods currently available and of some of the technicalities involved in the simultaneous statistical cross-correlation of several catalogues. The integrated cluster finder which aims at detecting clusters of galaxies using both X-ray and optical/infrared data was also presented.
